Why is it called Ballard Nature Center?
Ernie Ballard owned the 210 acres. He donated it to the community and provided funds to build the visitor center. He created a 501 (C) 3 foundation to manage the place as a nature center with a focus on habitat restoration, trails, and providing educational programming.
How many trails are there?
There are four main trails. These four trails also feature connecting trails allowing visitors to shorten or lengthen their walk.
Is the Center volunteer ran?
Partly. The board of directors serve as volunteers and there are many volunteers that help with programs, staffing the visitor center, and maintaining the grounds.
How is the Nature Center's operations funded?
The main source of funds for Ballard is our annual banquet. Other funds are generated from program fees, donations, memorials, CRP, and a small endowment.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Pet owners also must clean up after their dogs.
Are bikes, horses, or other vehicles allowed on the trails?
No, our trails are only for foot traffic. Strollers and wagons are allowed. Two of our trails are wheel-chair accessible.
Can I get professional pictures taken?
Yes! Professional photographers are asked to make a $50-$100 donation if they hold multiple sessions on the Nature Center’s property.
Is Ballard Nature Center run by the state?
No, the Center is a private, 501 (C) 3 - non-profit. We do not receive tax dollars.
Does the Nature Center receive grants?
Yes, we continually apply for grants. The grants we receive are not for general operation costs, though. Grants we receive are for improvement projects and programming. Our wetland overlook, fishing pier, and trail surfacing have been funded through grants.
